About

Welsh mezzo-soprano Sophie Kidwell is acclaimed across the German, Swiss and Austrian press for her "voluminous, velvety-smooth and elegant voice" (Opera Gazet), which makes audiences "sit up and take notice" (Das Opernmagazin). Described as "a name opera fans should remember" (Badische Neueste Nachrichten), Sophie is the winner of the 2024 Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition and a prize winner of the 2025 International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, where she was offered a two-year soloist contract with Stadttheater Bühnen Bern.

From 2023–25, Sophie was engaged at Theater Basel, where she jumped in last-minute as Carmen (Carmen, Bizet) with the Basel Symphony Orchestra before completing the run in the title role. Other highlights included Maddalena (Rigoletto, Verdi), the Alto Soloist in Mozart's Requiem in Romeo Castellucci's acclaimed staging conducted by Ivor Bolton CBE, Flora (La Traviata, Verdi), and Flosshilde (Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung) and Grimgerde (Die Walküre) in Wagner’s Ring Cycle, conducted by Jonathan Nott.

In the 2025/26 season, Sophie made her highly acclaimed debut as Olga (Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky) at Theater Aachen, reprised Maddalena at Opéra de Lausanne, and jumped in mid-rehearsals for Carmen with IF Opera, which opens in August. On the concert platform, she has appeared as mezzo-soprano soloist in Dvorák’s Stabat Mater, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, and Elgar's The Music Makers, among other engagements.

In the 2026/27 season, Sophie joins the soloist ensemble of Stadttheater Bühnen Bern, where she will make role debuts as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni, Mozart), Lola (Cavalleria rusticana, Mascagni), and Amastre (Xerxes, Handel), reprise Flora (La Traviata, Verdi), and appear in the world premiere of Sarah Nemtsov's Ophelias Flügel as Ophelia IV.
