About

Hailed in the international press as "a name that opera fans should remember", Mezzo-soprano Sophie Kidwell is gaining recognition across European opera houses for her “voluminous, velvety smooth and elegant voice”, distinguished by an "impressive usable range" and "sonorous lower register". She is the 2024 winner of the Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition and a prize winner of the 43rd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2025, where she was offered a two-year soloist contract at Stadttheater Bühnen Bern.

From 2023-25, Sophie was engaged at Theater Basel, where she jumped in last-minute as Carmen (Carmen, Bizet) with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, and subsequently finished the run in the title role. Her further roles at Theater Basel included Maddalena (Rigoletto, Verdi), Alto Soloist (Requiem, Mozart) staged by Romeo Castellucci and conducted by Ivor Bolton CBE, Flora (La Traviata, Verdi), Flosshilde (Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung, Wagner), and Grimgerde (Die Walküre, Wagner), among others.

In the current 2025/26 season, Sophie made her highly acclaimed debut as Olga (Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky) at Theater Aachen, and will reprise the role of Maddalena (Rigoletto, Verdi) at Opéra de Lausanne in June. On the concert platform, engagements include the Mezzo solos in Dvorák’s Stabat Mater with the Bern Symphony Orchestra, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Elgar’s Music Makers at the Basel Stadtcasino, among others.

In the upcoming 2026/27 season, Sophie looks forward to joining the soloist ensemble at Stadttheater Bühnen Bern, where she will debut the roles of Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni, Mozart), Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana, Mascagni), Amastre (Xerxes, Handel), as well as reprising the role of Flora (La Traviata, Verdi) and singing the world premiere of Ophelia IV in Ophelias Flügel by Sarah Nemtsov.
